david petraeus. the fbi is investigating whether the general's mistress, paula broadwell, may have revealed classified information, information she only had because of her relationship with the general. that is the question they're asking. good morning, everybody. i'm martha maccallum in "america's newsroom.". >> i'm gregg jarrett in for bill hemmer. that information may contradict information that general petraeus gave to congress just days later. martha: doug luzader joins us live with this report from washington. good morning, doug. >> reporter: good morning, guys. at a very basic level this is the store of an affair between general david petraeus and his biographer paula broad well. it gets complicated. there may be national security implication including into the broad investigation into the consulate in benghazi on september 11th. there is no question she would have had prime access to one. key players. she made a couple of public appearances to talk about that. that was at the university of denver, her alma mater last month where she spoke about the benghazi attack. this was
at the present. first of all, there's an fbi investigation ongoing and that will give us the definitive word on what transpired. putting together the best information we have today, the current assessment is that what happened in benghazi was, in fact, initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hoyers before in cairo. a copycat attack which were prompted of course by the video. >> senator, you said that two days before that, director petraeus said it was terrorism. why didn't ambassador rice call it terrorism two days later? >> because she could speak publicly only on unclassified speaking points. i have some concern with those speaking points. but let me correct one thing. >> right. but what are the concerns and why speak at all? in other words, why was there a reference to it being a terrorist attack taken out of the public talking points? >> that is something that we're going to find out. but it was. that's the point. now, with the allegation that the white house changed those talking points, that is false. there is only one thing that was changed, and i've checked into
uncovered by an fbi investigation into a series of e-mails sent by his biographer, paula broadwell, who was accused of sending harassing e-mails to another woman. that sparks an investigation that revealed her secret relationship with petraeus. but after looking at a recent speech she gave on the death of four americans in libya, people started wondering whether she and petraeus had shared any classified intel and whether she inadvertently spilled some of those secrets during her remarks. bill gross joins us live, what's your impression of this situation as it's playing out? >> well, it's certainly a very interesting situation, as you say. there's a joke going around on twitter that the french intelligence director resigned because he doesn't have an affair for six months. so the idea that an extramarital affair in itself would bring down the cia director is very isn't in my mind. there has to be more to the story. my guess is it has to do with internal cia politics. the agency's known to be using intelligence information to settle scores, or it could be related to the benghazi scandal.
having an affair with petraeus. and upon receiving broadwell's e-mails, kelley contacted the fbi which began investigating. now, jill kelley also has hired crisis communications expert judy smith. she has worked with monica lewinsky with kobe bryant and with former senator larry craig. and that all has a lot of folks scratching their heads. why would a woman who was the target of a nasty e-mail or two need a reputation fixer? well, it turns out that while investigating petraeus, the fbi uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 potentially inappropriate pages of documents mostly e-mails that kelley exchanged with general john allen. and who is general john allen? he is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan and he is the man who's nominated to be the supreme leader of nato. as you can imagine that, nomination was put on hold in light of all of these allegations. for the record, general allen denies any inappropriate relationship with kelley and these e-mails are described as flirtatious. so reaction to this unfolding and unbeliev
that i have a lot of confidence generally in the fbi. and they've got a difficult job. it is also possible that had we been told, then you'd be sitting here asking a question about why were you interfering in a criminal investigation. >> while the president withholds judgment, the investigation process is already under scrutiny on capitol hill. the heads of the fbi and the cia, the agenting head right now, mike morel met with them. he's sifting through e-mails between general john allen and jill kelley. it came to light after kelley began receiving anonymous messages in may. thinking she was being stalked, kelley flagged an fbi agent she knew, now identified as fred are dr frederick humphries. a hand full of e-mails between kelley and allen were flagged as inappropriate. however, this source insists there was no affair. allen who has denied any wrongdoing and an affair and whose nomination as supreme commander in europe is on hold has pledged to cooperate with the investigation. meanwhile, the fbi is still trying to wrap up the petraeus incident. they're looking through potential
fbi investigation which revealed the affair between general petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell. the newest twist, nbc confirming that broadwell e-mailed general allen first from the handle kelley patrol warning him about jill kelley painting her negatively. "the wall street journal" reporting that she tried to stop the fbi investigation that she started. this is news that nbc has not yet confirmed, however, we have been able to confirm that kelley called police over the weekend claiming to be an honorary consul-general and citing diplomatic protection in an effort to get the media including nbc off of her property. >> i'm an honorary consul-general so i have inviolability so i should -- they should not be able to cross my property. i don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved, as well. >> video taken by nbc shows diplomatic plates on her car. south korean authorities say she is an honorary consul and the state department says it has no connection to kelley. >> i can assure you that she does not work for the state department and has no formal affiliat
the timing behind the revelation. house majority leader eric cantor said an fbi employee told him in october about the petraeus affair. by that time an fbi investigation was already under way. the fbi told the director of national intelligence james clapper on election night, according to a senior u.s. intelligence official. the white house says it was notified the day after the election, and the president the following day. that doesn't make sense to house homeland security chairman peter king. >> this seems to have been going on for several months yet now it appears they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. >> "the new york times" reports the fbi actually started its investigation late this summer. the house and senate intelligence committees were also caught by surprise. >> are you going to investigate why the fbi didn't notify you before? >> yes, absolutely. i mean, this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. >> the fbi was investigating harassing e-
